San Lameer is situated on the South Coast of Natal just outside the popular holiday town of Margate. The coast was the original ‘golf coast’ in the country, due to the abundance of good courses in a relatively small area. Apart from golf and the year round sun, sea and sand, there are adventurous activities at the nearby Wild Coast Sun Resort (which is home to the fantastic Robert Trent Jones Course) and Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve. The Course is part of one of the first golfing estates and resorts in South Africa. Apart from the course, there is a challenging mashie, a 4 star hotel, restaurants, shops and a beautiful blue flag beach. The Country Club has a fine Pro Shop, comfortable change rooms, a very good halfway house as well as a large lively bar.

The Course:

This challenging course is set in one of the last remaining Wetland Forests on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. As with all Peter Matkovich designed courses the natural surroundings are used to the fullest, with water and the forest the predominant features, this gives the course a Florida feel, however the emphasis is not purely on target golf as the nearby Indian Ocean brings in a menacing wind which adds a new dimension to the course and adds a links type feel especially on the upper plateau. The course is also home to numerous antelope and bird species and has some extremely pleasing visual aspects which make it not only a true test of golf but a total golfing experience. The ninth is regarded as the signature hole at San Lameer, a Par 3 measuring just 182m (Club Tees) from a very elevated tee, it seems straight forward, however when you take into account the small target, menacing water hazard behind and to the left of the green, trees and bunkers protecting the front and the right and its exposure to strong winds this par 3 all of a sudden is somewhat of a daunting prospect. It’s a great view from the tee and it requires a great shot, a truly great golf hole.
